Apple Dumplings w/Trolley Rolley Sauce
This was my Great Great Grandmother's Recipe that my Nanny found and would always make for the holidays and special occasions. One of my Mom's favorites.
Ingredients:
1 ½ Cups Sugar
1 ½ Cups Water
¼ tsp Cinnamon
¼ tsp Nutmeg
6-10 drops red food color
3 Tbls. Butter
2 Cups Flour
2/3 Cups Crisco Shortening
½ Cup Milk
Apples (approx. 4 cups)
Directions:
Combine Sugar, Water, Spices, Food
Color in saucepan; bring to a boil.
Remove; add butter. Sift dry
ingredients in bowl. Cut in
shortening to dry mixture. Add milk
and stir. Roll out onto floured
surface ¼ inch thick (18 x 12
rectangle) Cut into 6” squares.
Place apple slices onto squares;
sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon,
nutmeg and butter. Fold and place in
pan and pour syrup over dumplings.
Bake @ 375° for 35 minutes.
Trolley Rolley
Sauce
1 Cup Sugar
1 Tbls Flour
1 Cup Water
2 Tbls Butter
Heat
until sugar has dissolved. Pour over
dumplings.
