Nanny's Home-Made Roll Recipe
(Double Recipe - this is the only way to
feed our bunch at Thanksgiving and Christmas!) In a large bowl, put 2 c.
hot water and 1 handful Crisco. Let melt (can microwave for a minute.)
Add 8 Tbsp. sugar and let the mixture cool down to room temp. In another
bowl, put 2 pkgs. yeast and 1 TBsp. sugar in tipid water and let rise
about 10 minutes. Mix with crisco water. Add 2 c. self-rising flour and
mix. Continue to add one cup of flour at a time, mixing between each
one, until you have a total of 5 1/2 cups of flour in the mixture. Cover
with a plate or towel and let rise one hour in warm area. Place on flour
covered counter and roll out. Cut out rolls and place on buttered pans.
Let rise another hour. Bake at 350° for 10-15 minutes, butter tops, and
beat Aunt Sandy to the bowl!
